9800se checkboard
« on: May 14, 2004, 03:04:57 PM »

Ok. Before you all say something like 'Checkboards indicate damged pipelines' or 'You cant fix checkboards' let me just say I already know that. On my 256bit 9800se modded to 9800 and oc 400/350, all games are checkboard free with any degree of AF applied and no FSAA. It is when I turn on FSAA that the screen becomes checkboarded. I doubt it is because of the extra throughput that FSAA requires because it also happens in ancient games such as the original UT and Thief, neither of which could be considered hardware intensive.
This is strange as I have heard of people forcing AA and it removes checkboards. That FSAA doesnt work is no big deal as the card was bought for Doom 3 and Hl2 anyway, but I am curious as to why it could be happening.

I have seen on some Radeon 9800SE's which driverrs you use also decides the problem.
In your case, it smells drivers all the way to me, but I could be wrong, I suggest starting to clean out drivers and try other methods on the softmod and see if you get different results.

Tried Omega 4.4 and 3.10 and still the same results. Downloading 3.7 and will try them. Used drivercleaner but to no effect. Diabling hyper z and fast z clear makes no difference the checkboard is still there.

This might seem like a stupid question but when you installed the omega drivers you did install the 9800SE -> 9800NP\Pro drivers i assume, if not that would be the problem otherwise I wouldnt have a clue whats wrong.  Wink

Yeah installed the 9800se -> 9800np drivers and have now also tried the 3.7 omegas. Maybe I might have to install the 4.5 ats and apply the patched fle manually...

Well have you tried RivaTuner route? www.guru3d.com then click on Riva Tuner, it includes a patch script and I can PERSONALLY confirm that it worked for me.

Which drivers do you need to use? I tried 4.5 cats and 4.4 cats but none worked it still says "9800 series (4x1)" instead of 8x1 for unlocked. I patched the file before install but still does not work. I have cat 3.6 somewhere so mabey I should try them...

Hmmm I am not sure at the driver number that I used... It was the latest at that time...
Let me see if I can find the article where I did this mod.

Here it is:
http://www.uberhardware.net/index.php?page=documents&type=articles&id=20

Have a look through that, I think I got the driver file lying around. 3.10 cats I think I used.
