Microsoft signs Japanese games wizard fo
SOFTWARE GIANT Microsoft has hired Final Fantasy author, Hironobu Sakaguchi, to make two games exclusively for its next generation Xbox console.
The Wall St Journal said that the games would likely appear soon after the Xbox 2 is launched, but would be aimed at the worldwide rather than the local Japanese market.
The Xbox2 will likely be launched later on this year.
The reasons for signing Sakaguchi are pretty clear. Microsoft wants to woo the entire Japanese console/games development market and cut off its major competitor Sony at the gulch.

ATIs First Graphics Card with 512MB
ATI Technologies showcased on Thursday its first graphics card with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, especially noticing that the design challenge about the actual board was not that serious. Still, it is yet unclear whether and when such products are projected to emerge in retail.
I wouldnt think this would be a substantial rework, certainly not like designing a new board design from scratch, ATIs spokeswoman Patricia Mikula said

Radeon X700LE spotted in the wild
RV410 remains a controversial core with many variations. It's interesting to note that we never saw some variations such as X700XT, but we got some like X700LE that we didnt expect. Now you can buy X700PRO cards and X700 vanilla but not X700XT. ATI decided to cancel X700XT earlier. The X700XT does not make much sense as X800 vanilla is priced the same and it's ripping the X700XT's performance guts out.
The X800 vanilla with twelve pipelines versus eight pipelines of X700XT makes a much faster solution and its available now.

Next ATI card will have 512MB memory
WE EXPECT that ATI will be making an announcement, maybe as early this weekend, about a 512MB version of its X850 card.
The evidence? Here's the rundown...
ATI is sponsoring a big overclocking tournament this weekend. It is publicly saying that there will be an 'unveiling' of some sort, but no-one knows what it is.
Some of the world's top overclockers, including chaps going by the name of Oppainter, Fugger and Macci are going out there to go and take on the world record 3DMark. Aside from the fact that current ATI hardware will barely scrape the world record, these guys have been told to expect new hardware to fiddle with.
Then, there are benchmarks and blurry photos showing up on tech site Driver Heaven, which appears to have a new bit of kit in its mitts.

Intel Pentium 4 600s available worldwide
INTEL 600 SERIES CPUs are not a secret anymore. Intel introduced them this Sunday morning and we were not that surprised to learn that you can already buy these CPUs in Japan.
We are told that you can actually buy them in Europe as well. You can go to shops to etailers and retailers and get 'em. The Intel 600 series starts with a 3.2GHz core with 2MB of cache priced at 215 and goes up to a 3.6GHz Pentium 4 660 with 2MB cache priced at a hefty 562. All of the 600 series are 64 bit CPUs as well as having NX bit support and Speedstep, as we reported a time ago.
You can find European CPUs at this address and actually buy them from yesterday. They will sure be in the shops tomorrow when Europe wakes up.
You can see these CPUs in Japanese retail here.
So from this historic Sunday Intel finally becomes a 64 bit desktop player. |

ATI X800 All in Wonder available
IT'S STILL AN AGP card in these times of PCIe but a lot of people are still waiting for it. Yes, of course, we are talking about Radeon X800AIW cards. ATI introduced Radeon X800 All in Wonder back in September and we've been waiting for this card ever since.
Things have finally changed as we are informed that you can get some of these cards at the Newegg shop. Here is the here.
It's packed with a bunch of cables for all the ins and outs you need and it's equipped with a nice remote controller and cool software support. This card is an AGP version and the only possible All in Wonder PCIe you can buy are based on the not so fast four pipelined X600 core, AIW of course.
The All in Wonder X800 is priced at $498 just as much as it was supposed to be and it's clocked to 500MHz core and 1000MHz memory.

Sapphire builds all R430/R480 cards
WE MANAGED to find out that in these early days of Radeon X800 vanilla, X800 XL and X850, Sapphire has managed to secure a very nice contract.
For those of you who don't know, Sapphire is building most ATI based cards. There is another firm called Celestica which has also built cards for ATI and its partners.
But it appears Sapphire has won this round and is producing all X850 and new PCIe X800 cards based on the R430 core. Asus and MSI could make their own cards but it might cost them too much to produce their own printed circuit boards (PCBs), and put them together.

Windows XP64 Pro RC2 out
MICROSOFT HAS put build 1433 of Windows XP Pro on its web site for download.
This is build 1433, and most people appear to think there may well be another version available before the software, intended to support Intel's EM64T CPUs and AMD's 64-32 microprocessor.
This is still likely to arrive at the end of the first quarter or shortly afterwards. AMD and Intel both say they expect it in the first half of this year.
Golly, it's been a long wait!

China Says It Shut Down Internet Cafes
Quote: Chinese authorities shut down more than 12,575 Internet cafes last year for operating illegally.
The purpose of the crackdown was to create a "safer environment for young people in China." It didn't give details of the violations, but said the businesses closed "were mainly located nearby primary schools and middle schools."
China promotes Internet use for business and education, but communist authorities complain that Internet cafes harm public morality by giving children access to violent games and sexually explicit material.
The government controls what the public can see online and blocks access to Web sites deemed pornographic or subversive. Internet cafes are banned near schools and the hours that children can use them are restricted.
