MAXTOR?? wht the hell is wrong?
« on: August 02, 2004, 06:14:01 PM »

Hey guys, I have a couple of MAXTOR HDD's ; an old 4GB and a newer 40GB. both have failed on me. the 4GB had a life time of 4 years but the 40GB lived for less than 2 years of use. I've heard similar complaints from more than a couple of friends about MAXTOR drives failing way more than other brands. I've always respected MAXTOR and always thought that they were among the best HDD manufacturers, but I'm having second thoughts now. have you guys had trouble with MAXTOR  too or am I -and my friends- just plain unlucky?

I've just lost a 30gig maxtor, I also have an 80gig and 40gig in my pc and have noticed they get very hot. I now have the 80gig hanging outside the case and it stays just warm. while the 40gig still gets hot and I also have a 30gig IBM which hardly get warm at all.

I built a friends computer with a maxtor drive and it it's been running fine. 1 hiccup when i was building it, it would not boot off the 80GB drive. I don't know if this was bios or the drive at fault, but i fixed it by using a 15GB IBM I had lieing around for the bootsector, the 80GB shows no other unusual problems.

You mean you couldn't get it to boot off the 80? that's unusual, I've booted from 80GB Maxtors before without a problem, guess it's ur BIOS. Anyway, I don't think I'll be buying any MAXTOR any time soon. I think I'll start going with Western Digital or SAMSUNG. Any remarks about SAMSUNGs?

Don't go with samsungs... they're cheap in price for a reason Smiley.  Cyclone has it right though, WD or segate (I prefer WD).

WD or Seagate they are basically the same the seagate drives now come with a 5yr warrenty BUT its not what its cracked up to be this is part of an email that i gto from Seagate (due to where i work)

" (1) The Warranty covers all drives excluding the External units

        (2) Seagate ( via Distribution)
                (i) First 3 Years Seagate offer Replacement or credit in following manner:
Replacement (Refurbished) or 100% credit for first 180 days from ship date
Replacement (refurbished) or 90% credit for 181 - 365 days from ship date
Replacement (refurbished) or 75% credit for Year 2 from ship date
Replacement (refurbished) or 50% credit for Year 3 from ship date
25% Credit ONLY for Year 4 from ship date
10% Credit ONLY for Year 5 from ship date

Note Credit calculated at current market price or last advertised price

        (3) Seagate direct to end user
Seagate offer only Replacement (refurbished) for full 5 years to endusers, faulty drive sent Seagate at enduser expense and responsibility.

Therefore the Distributor holds the responsibility of the 4 and 5 year"

so the 5yrs is basically BS
