What temp should I run at???
« on: November 10, 2004, 12:49:09 PM »

I have a Intel 3ghz prescott proc.  With a Thermalright SLK-900 HSF and a 90mm Vantec Tornado.   My computer seems to be running at 48c.
I was wondering what is the normal operation temp of this prescott proc.   My computer is damn loud, and i want to add a fan controller, but if I slow down my fan I will gain heat.
should I look into liquid cooling, or can this proc. run at a little higher heat.

I think 48C is quite cool for a prescott, theyre supposed to run damn hot. Not really any problems there, unless you want to seriously overclock it, then a water cooling system would be awsome. Wink

yeah, from what I've heard the prescotts are pretty hot, I'd imagine that's a normal temperature...

but p4's arent meant to run as hot as athlons, especially the palominos like yours. plus the P4s run at a lower voltage.

Hehe. When I first got my 1800+ palomino it got up to 90C! Funny thing is it was still stable! After replacing the crap stock hsf and replaced it with a massive copper one it ran better. Infact its still alive today!

but p4's arent meant to run as hot as athlons, especially the palominos like yours. plus the P4s run at a lower voltage.
It depends on the p4 what voltage it runs at. The northwoods can have a vcore rating anywhere from 1.475 up to 1.575. ( I have a 1.525v one).
but i spose its still less than the Athlons. so yeah you're right. The P4s also have a heatspreader built onto the chip to help with heat disipation too.

From what i've seen, the prescotts are supposed to be in between the northwoods and bartons for heat so that seems right on. The thermal rating for a Prescott is 70C I think. So aslong as you dony exceed this mark too often your CPU should be fine. It if gets too hot it will throttle its speed back.

Here is a screen shot of the temp my cpu runs at Grin It was on a particularly warm day too (28C), with winamp running and Ie and all that crap.

LOL, I think mines gotten at least taht high before, it always used to shutdown at 90C, then I changed it to 85C because I didnt want it getting that hot. It usually runs about 70C now. Wink

Well I have decided to give Watercooling a spin.  I ordered my water pump 2 days ago.  I purchased the Via Aqua 1300.  As soon as i get it in the mail I will go out and purchase the rest of the things.  I just want to make sure i get the right size tubing for the pump.

to tell you the truth I have it only slightly overclocked.  I noticed in some games like BF: Vietnam strange lines start to appear for some odd reason.  I guess that game is very sensitive to overclocking.  So i was forced to underclock the card a bit.  I am running my card at  344 core/688 memory.
Oh , and yes I am planning on cooling the GPU also.
I am still seraching for a good waterblock for the CPU, and I also need a WB for the GPU.
I went ahead and ordered a 77 Pontiac Bonneville heatercore since they are talked about alot.  I also have a Via Aqua 1300 pump coming.  I got some 1/2' barbs, and 10' of tubing for the setup also.
It looks as if things are coming together nicely.  I cant wait to get the heater core so I can soldier on the barbs.
