Cooling techniques
« on: February 05, 2005, 09:27:19 AM »

Don't worry I'm just bored. But I thought I might make a thread where ppl just share ideas. There don't seem to be many of these threads around.

Here are a few ideas.

Cheap Fan mounts.

I've got this TT Silent Boost Heatsink. Its loud. The fan sucks. Literally. Its as loud as a delta on steroids. So I got some Arctic Cooling fans (A TC one and Blue led one http://www.pccasegear.com/category115_1.htm ) But I found I couldn't mount it on coz the screw mounts were too big for the heatsink. (heatsink is similar to this: http://www.pccasegear.com/prod1536.htm )

So what to do? Mount it on of course!

Looking in a pile of junk, theres some Velcro dots..some screw…tape…thermal paste…

Well screw mounting isn’t the best method as it doesn’t dampen vibration well. I forgot how I got the idea, but I got the Velcro dots and cut the into 4 pieces for each side of the fan and heatsink shroud and a bigger dot in the middle of the dead spot of the fan. Just chuck the fan on and voila! And to seal off the gaps, I used magic tape which is infinitely better that normal tape.

But if you don’t have Velcro handy, you could always use 6mm BBs and put the on the fan and glue it on then seal the gap with some tae. The 6mm BB should add strength, but should also reduce noise as there is some height on it. This improves airflow into the heatsink. For example, the Vantec Tornadoes have such a gap for better airflow.

There’ll be more to come once I find some time. But post up your mods and share the ideas!

Quiet is good - Pin mods

Ok this one is really simple, and some of you guys might know it already. But its a really useful mod. This work only for 4 pin molex fans as you need to access the other lines.

As you can see on the molex connector, there are 4 wires, a red one (+5V), a yellow (+12v) and two black ones (grounds)

So by changing the pins around, you can vary the voltage to how much juice your fans get.

And just to let you guys know, sometimes a slower speed fan is much better than a high speed fan, as it can produce better results - giving time for the air to absorb the heat and reduce recycling of hot air.

But how do you get the pins out? Well you can get those depinners, but you can also just use a needle. The pins have 2 barbs (see picture) which you can bend and poke in so the pin will slide out. To get the pin back in, make sure you pull the pins out, otherwise they might just fall out and not make a circuit.

Ok but which sockest to put it in? Well if you put the pins (as shown in the diagram) you can create 7V. just put the red wire into a ground.

So here it works like this:
+12V - +5V = +7V

5V is being grounded so yeah.

If you want it even quieter, you can ground the 12V and put the 5V line into the 12V line. Ya get me here?

Well if you're a bit lost, there are usually two wires coming from the fan. The black one is a ground and the red one is the 12V.

Just take some time to figure this one out guys, one you get it, its a simple as plugging a power connector.

TC...Thermally controlled...

Ok you want your TC fan at full blast? Just cut off that resistor and connect the wires together.

Want it at low speed? Just cut off the resistor and don't connect it.

Simple.

Prevention
Use fan filters. Simple.

Oh yeah fan filters do increase noise.
all grills are 120mms
Normal wire ones increase noise by about 0.6dB
Aluminium fan filters increase noise by about 2.3dB
Atomic fan grills (decoratice ones) increase noise by about 5dB

worst fan i ever bought
and i don't care about noise once the job is being achieved but this fan doesn't do S**t for cooling

you prolly lucky
to me it seems the only good ones are the ones that they give with their psu and the 80mm one that's on a volcano 11

Try the fans in different setups and see which gives you better temps. I have mine with 2x intake at the front, 1x intake on the side and 2x exhaust on the back.

i was cleaned my pc case and heatsinks in my computer yesterday and i took of my graphics card fan/heatsink to find that only half of the gpu was covered in thermal paste i evened it out and now i have a higher overclock and i also cleaned my northbridge heatsink and cpu heatsink and now i can overclock my cpu by 4 fsb
(before 0) without my temps raising now my next project is to arrange all the wires so they arent everywhere

i got 9 case  fans
2 in the back as exhaust, cut out the fan guard
1 in side panel intake, added aluminium filter
4 infront
did some mods, front panel doesn't have spaces for air intake
the 2 lower fans blow air into the front panel, right infront those 2
fans have a sqaure hole 2"x2" to reduce negative pressure inside case
on top that are the other 2 fans blowing air across the case
1 , that is 4" infront the 2 top front panel fans to increase air flow over videocard
1 w alu fan filter aka tt thunderblade that doh work, by the lowest 2 5 1/4 trays

Probably the best air cooling technique, put the aircon on 10c. Works wonders! Grin Makes your hands a bit cold though.
