BT is the best! Even if I gotta wait a week to get a file... bein on dial up and all Cheesy

How big is the file? I am really intrested on how well BT works over 56k. Can you gimme some info on how fast you DL/UL at and how big a norm file is that you DL and how long it takes. That would be really cool if you could.

Now onto the big post Tongue

i have such a love/hate relationship w/ BT.  Sometimes it just hauls, andother times when it says thers like 50 seeds and a bunch of other clients it just is slooow.

I also hate guys that 1.)either dont share
2.) share but dont get their share rating above .5.  If they get it to .5-1.0 its usually fine, but the more seeding the better

f**ck, i hate this, my share ratio is 2.0 and i'm only d/ling at 17K, and upping @ 28K

Ok, just read this ok Smiley Maybe it will help you a bit and expalin why it somtimes gos fast and somtimes not.

First let me expalin somthing about your share rating. The share rating is the ratio of your amount uploaded divided by your amount downloaded. Really simple. It DOES NOT DIRECTLY AFFECT ANY PART OF THE CLIENT AT ALL. That means, it wont gain you extra speed or anything. I am sorry if I have confused you in the past about this.

Now, lets say you have a max DL of 200kB/s (1.5MB per min) and a max 30kB/s upload. You go to download Fedora (new free redhat project). The torrent starts. One thing you will want to do is set your upload 3kB's lower then your max. The reason for this is simple. You dont want to put a clog in your pipe. If your upload is maxed it will have a direct affect on your download speed. Also, you may want to cap your download as well. You may not find a diffrence, or you may find a big diffrence. All clients now basicly let you do that. All the experimental clients allow you to as well. To do this is quite simple. If you are using an experimental client like Bit Tornado when the torrent is running just click the advanced button up top. Then at the bottom right you can cap your max download rate.

Now, if you cap your max upload 3kB/s it should help keep your pipe If you deicde to play a game, you will want to cap your upload and your download a bit. This way your game runs good and your client does not clog the line.

Now, as for that 50 seeds and a lot more peers. Well this can be explained.

1. Your uploading to much and not allowing your download speed to get through.
2. (long) MOST of the time when you download you rely on the other peers to give you what you need. Seeds USUALLY (not always but most of the time) are tossing out data onto the group that isnt already there. Meaning, say you have 2 seeds and 50 peers. Well all those seeds are doing is tossing the data out that all those peers dont have to a bunch of diffrent people. Then the seed kinda backs off and lets the peers toss the data around till everyone has a full peice. Basicly the seed is like the ref at b-ball game putting the ball in play. Once that happens then one of the players gets the ball (data) uses it and tosses it to somone else. All the seed is really doing is putting new balls into play that arnt already there. I hope that makes sense.

Dont think the seed is there to make everything go fast. No all it is trying to do is get data to diffrent peers so they can keep passing new data to eachother.

Now, why it could go slow because of this. A lot of the time when a anime or game is released. A lot of people get it at the same time (duh). Now, say 50 people on really high speed are downloading and a lot of others on a slower connction are downloading a well. Well usually those really fast people that are keeping the torrent going really fast, close up as soon as its done. This leaves a LOT of slower people to toss the data around. Usually these 8-15kB/s upload people are only uploading about 7-9kB/s acorss the net. If you have a lot of people its gunna go quite slow. Thats just how it is.

Even if you are on really high speed, if those other peers cant upload that fast, then your DL speed is gunna be really slow.

Now, somtimes you can be lucky. A seed or two may lock onto you because you are uploading quite fast. They will give you more data and basicly it will hope you seed because of this. Its a stupid idea. But thats how it is.

I hope you understand now why a lot of torrents go slow.

But keep this in mind. You dont need to upload a real lot to get a real fast speed. Below is a picture to see what I mean. Dont thing that you MUST have a real fast upload speed to get great download speed. It helps to have youe pipe clear (cap your download a bit and cap your upload a bit). Another tip is if you are cable, and you can upload at atleast 30kB/s (33kB/s cus you want to take away 3kB) then it would be good to upload between 5-6 max uploads at a time. You want to have about 6-8 kB\s per person you are uploading to. Just a good rule to follow, set your max uploads so whatever your upload speed is you have atleast 6-8kB/s for each per (max upload 5, peers 5, easy Smiley).

I hope this kinda cleard a few things up. There are a few tips mixed in my pile of thoughts and junk. I hope it does help. I am much better at helping people over MSN. Auctially Skype would be best (I will b on MSN and Skype a lot starting tonite). So if you want some "real" help where we can talk about your setup and such, what client, your UL/DL speed, ect I can help you a lot more Smiley.

Well here is a picture to show that you dun need to upload a lot to download a lot Smiley. I changed the settings to the ones I used in the example above. I let it sit for a few mins before I took the screenshot that way it was fully ajusted.

MSG me on MSN if you want some "real" help. As I said this was just a kinda Q/A thing that explains a few more things on how BT works that wasnt in my starter guide. I may refine this later and put it in it.

Well thats that.

-S

Note: In the pic below, the torrent was running for about 4hs when I took the pic. It was never restarted once. It is about 3GB and is going to take about another hour to finish from the time the pic was taken. Anyways, this pic shows that you dun need to UL a lot to DL a lot Smiley. BTW, my share rating will go up quite a bit as soon as I start to seed Smiley. My share ratio is bad cus i am downloadin a lot more then uploadin in this pic.

In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above?

At least it is true... that man has no controll, even over his own will.
