| Socket 939 Has a Good Lifespan Ahead |
X-Bit Labs reports that the AMD 939 Socket should havea good life span ahead of itself...
“Certainly AMD is always planning and designing for future products. But current sockets have good life ahead of them… We can’t give specific lifespans because customer demand is a huge factor in determining how long we support a socket,” the official concluded.

| nForce4 Pro Review |
Hexus review the nForce4 Pro Opteron chipset with PCI-E:
Socket 940 just got sexy again. Uniprocessor Opteron and Athlon FX systems get PCI Express and arguably the best disk and networking controllers on the market. SMP Opteron gets everything in counts of two or four, over and above the base CK8-04 configuration and feature set. Board partners seem to be ignoring uniprocessor for the time being, dual and quad Opteron getting masses of nForce4 love from the likes of Tyan. |

| Ipod Shuffle. |
Apple has released its new flash drive ipod as rumored, the first thing that stries you about it is the price, most apple products are rather expensive, but at just $150 for the 512 meb "Ipod Shuffle", it is extremely good value. On the flipside for whatever reason, apple havnt included a LCD screen, just the basic, volume, play-pause, and skip track buttons, this will turn most of instantly, although it is practically weightless at a mere 40g, also extremely tiny, has 12 hours battery length, and still uses itunes ( , kinda pointless on a flash drive, specially since it lacks WMA support, again )
Does it diserve the ipod name? IMO probly not, but check it out anyway.

| XBOX 2 to debut at E3 2005? |
What’s that noise, you ask? What you’re hearing right now is the sound of 10,000 Xbox fanboys purchasing their tickets to LA for E3—Microsoft confirmed a report that the Xbox 2/Xenon will indeed not debut at the Game Developers Conference this year (GDC was where they debuted the original Xbox 5 years ago); nearest in the schedule is the Electronics Entertainment Expo in May, but MS isn’t making any promises. What? Don’t look surprised, we didn’t really think Gates was going to make it happen at CES.

Also talked about are tools, methods, commands etc for getting more out of Windows XP, doing things more efficiently, getting to places faster, saving time, saving keystrokes, and more. Another way you might look at this page is as one that can make a good Windows XP system better, one that helps keep a good XP machine from going bad, or one that can help make a bad WinXP installation good again. |

| Intel 3.46GHz EE CPU Review |
t-break reviews the Intel 3.46GHz EE CPU:
The 3.46GHz CPU is based on the Gallatin core and is basically a Xeon with a 1066MHz (4 x 266MHz) FSB sold as a Pentium4. This was a bit surprising as the Gallatin is based on the older Northwood core and not the newer 0.90nm Prescott core that is used by all new Pentium4 CPUs. Besides the FSB speed bump, this CPU being an Extreme Edition, features 2MB of L3 cache which is over and above the L1 and L2 caches found is standard Pentium4 CPUs. Like most new CPUs by Intel, the 3.46GHz EE is packaged in an LGA775 format.

| MSi caught in a pipeline cheat? |
It seems like MSi was caught selling 6800 non GT chip equipped cards as 6800 GT.
For those who is a bit outdated on the 6800 non GT vs 6800 GT the main diffrence is that the non GT comes with 12 pipes and 5 vertex shaders.
While the GT on the other hand comes with 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shaders.
Attempts toup those pipelines has not proven to be a 100% success.
With a lot of artifacts present the unlock is considered unsuccesful.
So far these cards have only shown themselves in Singapore and Germany.
However, these cards are fairly easy to spot.
As programs like RivaTuner easily tells the truth.
Until now, MSI have not comed with a statement on what has happened.

| ATi takes the lead over Nvidia |
In the 4th quarter of 2004, ATi topped out.
Maybe not so strange with the 9800's coming down at a very good price.
But that is only for the graphics market.
Intergrated graphics was won by Intel over both ATi and Nvidia.
On the mobile market, ATi still holds the lead thanks to the latest power offered by the mobile Radeon 9700.

| AusFX Increases Bandwidth |
First of all big apologies for the length of time it has taken for ausfx.com to come back online. We had a MASSIVE influx of traffic on the last week of the month of January which therefore made us go over the bandwidth / transfer limit. There was simply nothing really we could do until the next month rolled over! To stop this happening again we have neally DOUBLED the transfer bandwidth!!!
We have a total of 25gig transfer / month which should be plenty for the site for some time to come! We were only on 15gig per month before so as you can see thats quite a MASSIVE increase!
Thanks for your patience and commitment!! Going over bandwidth is not all that bad when you think of it in a growth way! Means the site is becoming more popular and more sought after!
Its gonna be a great year
Enjoy!

P.S BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE DONATED TO AUSFX THIS HAS ALLOWED US TO MAKE THE UPGRADE, WITHOUT THE MEMBERS SUPPORT THIS WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE! THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! |

| Windows 64 to arrive in April |
SOURCES CLAIMED Microsoft is planning to introduce its 64 bit operating system for Intel and AMD processors (iAMD64) on the 29th of April. The sources are close to Microsoft.
It appears there will be a release to manufacturing version of WinXP 64 in March. That's the stage before the CDs get stamped out and the boxes get printed.
Quite coincidentally, Intel will finally be ready with its full line of 64 bit capable CPUs, including Celeron 64s, close to that date. This, of course, is entirely coincidental and is just the way things can spookily happen at the same time in our industry.

| Net users are search idiots |
A SURVEY from Pew Internet and American Life Project, has said that users are dumb when it comes to using Interweb search engines.
According to the survey, users don't know how search engines operate or how they present their results.
The survey of nearly 2,200 adults shows that Internet users settle quickly on a single search engine and then stick with it, rather than switching as search technology evolves. They also don't notice or understand the different kinds of search results they get.
Just over a third are aware of the distinction between paid or "sponsored" results and unpaid results and only about 15 percent could tell the difference in a police line-up.
More than two thirds think that search engines are a fair and unbiased source of information. Apparently because of some other comments these people put on their survey papers these are probably the dumber types. The 19 per cent who were more sceptical were generally a bit more clued up on the Internet.

| Intel dual-core to be '8xx' se |
TheRegister Reports:
To that we can add the prices: $241, $316 and $530 for the 820, 830 and 840, respectively. The 8xx model number coding will distinguish the dual-core parts from the 7xx series P4 Extreme Edition line-up. Smithfield has been roadmapped for an early Q3 debut, but Intel may formally launch the chip family late Q2, it has emerged.
The next version of the P4, however, is the 6xx series, which adds not only 64-bit addressing but ups the chip's L2 cache to 2MB from the current 1MB and brings Intel's power-conserving SpeedStep technology firmly into the desktop arena. |

The technology that will enable Google to move in on the market has been around for some time. Software by the London-based company, Skype, has been downloaded nearly 54 million times around the world but no large telecommunication firms have properly exploited it.

| Why is Nforce 5 a two chip design? |
WHILE NVIDIA is still working hard on the Nforce 5 chipset, we have some things that might explain why Nvidia actually had to go for a two chip design with Nforce 5.
The first argument is that the Pentium chipset requires a memory controller as the P4 doesn't have memory controlled built in the die. That's unlike Athlon 64/FX CPUs.
With chipsets, and for the core logic chip it's always about the die area. Still this time space was not the primary thing. Nvidia had to go for a two chip design simply as one chip design would require lots of IO pins. A memory controller needs many input/output pin and the more pins you use, the more expensive the chipset package.

Tim Willits: Well, there's the Xbox version which should be out soon. Then of course there's Quake 4. When we have more information on that very soon, but it's going to be a very different experience to Doom 3 - there's tanks and Walkers and all kinds of guys running around in this huge war. I build optimized builds of both the Firefox browser and the Thunderbird email client. My builds are designed for maximum stability and speed. So far I have found a sizable increase in browsing speed, when compared to the official Firefox builds, as evidenced by this analysis. I use RELEASE, BRANCH, and TRUNK source trees for my builds. For the uninitiated, RELEASE builds are the most stable builds available and are intended for release to the general public. BRANCH builds are potentially less stable than RELEASE builds but more stable than TRUNK builds, which are made from the absolute bleeding edge of the source code and thus the most likely to be unstable.

Sapphire said that you will get extra performance kick and won't have to break the bank to buy this card. Usually any PCIe performance cards costs you quite a lot of money but this one might be reasonably priced. It will sure be cheaper than any of the X800 PCIe cards.
It is an eight pipelines part with six vertex Shaders with X700XT chip inside but just called X700PRO. Sapphire uses special cooler and its own APE Advanced Performance Enhancer utility that allows you to overclock the card. Sapphire will offer you its "Redline" utility that will allow you to overclock things that little bit more.

ThrottleWatch 2.0 is out ! This already popular freeware detects CPU "throttling" due to overheating. New version 2.0 also tracks changes to your CPU core speed and voltage made by Intel SpeedStep and AMD Cool'n'Quiet technologies.
The amount of heat a CPU produces varies according to the processing load. In situations of high sustained load (such as performance benchmarks, etc...), a CPU may produce more heat than the cooling mechanism is capable of removing, and reach a high enough internal temperature to trigger throttling.
ThrottleWatch™ monitors and graphically displays both the CPU load and any throttling that occurs.

| Gainwards dual SLI water cooled 6800 |
As seen on the inquirer
If you think that you saw it all, wait until you sees the dual SLI water cooler for two Gainward 6800 Ultra PCIe graphic cards.
Gainward has worked on this for some time and it got the first samples back. It had an idea to water-cool the cards but to make a water cooler that will attach to both cards. The cooler actually fits on both cards at the same time and it's specially designed for that purpose.
The company went one step further, as it offered CPU blocks teamed with red tubes all connected to two times twelve CM radiators topped with CM fans. Overclockers have to love this as it's all ready for you but it won't be cheap.
Those coolers have already sampled and Gainward is expected to release them soon. You can bet that Gainward plans to overclock its cards and that it wants to strike hard on 3Dmark05 10000 results and possibly break it. Gainward 6800 Ultra PCIe should be available by the end of the month. |

What NVIDIA fails to make clear, however, is that SLI currently requires NVIDIA to write driver profiles for each game to support SLI. Are all the games you want to play supported?
