R430 and R480 ship in quantities
YESTERDAY AT this show we managed to talk to our good friend, ATI CEO Dave Orton, and he told us that ATI has shipped quite a few R430 chips already. Senior VP Rick Bergman confirmed the claims and said that the company is doing fine in providing both R430 and R480 chips to its customers.

This finally means that ATI might start shipping its products after the announcement as X800XL, X800 and X850XT PE cards should be ready shortly. Taiwanese companies here said that for a change they can get those chips even now and that they are doing the last preparations before they launch the cards in retail. Their samples are either ready or will be shipped out very soon.

ATI Radeon Xpress 200 is highly overcloc
WE MET ATI here in Vegas but we were surprised to see ATI's chipset used in heavily overclocking situations. ATI managed to overclock systems to FSB 315 times 8.5 resulting a frequency of 2677.5 MHz on Athlon FX 55 core.

The machine was water-cooled and had new X850XT Platinum Edition card overclocked from 540 MHz to 600 MHz and memory running to a solid 1200MHz. ATI said that it hadn’t modified the motherboard or graphics card, so you can actually get to those scores yourselves.

Phantom system spotted @ CES
The Phantom was spotted at CES recently and is rumored to arrive sometime in the middle of 2005. Infinium Labs calls the device a broadband receiver with integrated on demand game delivery service. It is digital receiver but you can play games on it.

Heres a snip from the article.

The company will offer you a list of games every month and you will be able to choose lets say five of your favourite games and play it for a month. You can play your game next month if you like until you finish and replace it with a new game. Its interesting concept and it sure is cheaper than going out and buy every single console game for $50 a peace. Then again you won't be able to chose all you want.

Intel researchers build laser on chip
Working with the basic material of computer chips, Intel Corp. researchers have constructed an all-silicon laser that could lead to computers one day harnessing light waves rather than electrical currents to shuttle data swiftly.

Today, lasers that power fast optical networks require exotic -- and expensive -- materials and are mainly used in vast communications networks. With everyday silicon, the capacity and efficiency of light waves could be used cheaply in much smaller environments.

As a result, the movement of data within computers would keep up with the ever-increasing speed of microprocessors, breaking through an increasingly problematic bottleneck that exists for users of complex programs, such as video editors, large businesses and governments.

Silicon lasers also could be mass produced, using the same equipment on which standard chips are made.

But silicon, the semiconductor that makes up computer memory and logic chips, has only recently been considered for use in photonics, or light-based technology -- and it promises to revolutionize that field as it did electronics.

Lawsuit claims Apple iTunes violates law
An unhappy iTunes online music store customer is suing Apple Computer Inc., alleging the company broke antitrust laws by only allowing iTunes to work with its own music player, the iPod, freezing out competitors, court filings showed.

Apple, whichd its online music store in April 2003 after introducing the iPod in October 2001, uses technology to ensure each digital song bought from its store only plays on the iPod, a computer or home stereo system.

AMD's Centrino challenger: Turion
Turion is the brand name of a new line of energy-efficient notebook processors Advanced Micro Devices will come out with in the first half of 2005. It is chipmaker's response to Intel's Centrino notebook technology, company executives said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

While the company did not reveal any technical specifications on the chip, AMD said Turion will fit into thin and light notebooks and be optimized for extending battery power. Currently, AMD mostly sells notebook chips for "performance" notebooks, which provide desktoplike computing power but can sap batteries and generate heat.

The company's Athlon 64 notebook chips come with thermal ceilings ranging from 25 watts to 62 watts. By contrast, the Pentium M, the processor at the heart of the Centrino chip bundle, has a thermal ceiling of about 20 watts. The thermal ceiling gauges how much heat the processor can produce without endangering the performance of the notebook.

DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil Preview
The original announcement of DOOM 3: Resurrection of evil was pretty sparse when it came to details, so Activision, id, and Nerve finally decided to break their silence about the expansion. We talked to Tim Willits and Matt Hooper in order to get the scoop and they were more than willing to fill us in on the nitty gritty as evil tries to bash its way back into our universe via the portal on Mars.

Intel Smithfield captured in pictures
AS WE TOLD you a couple of hours ago, here Intel was indeed showing off its dual core CPU. In the last part we missed out the Intel codenames as Intel calls these CPUs X40, X30 and X20, but we were right that this CPU managed to come to Vegas.

We manage to snap a box packed with 3.0 GHz Smithfield CPU powered with the next generation Lakeport chipset. We saw the machine up and running and it indeed presented itself in Windows Task Manager as a dual core CPU.

HD video starts to make a splash
THE ADOPTION of HD Video by consumers is finally starting to take off, according to exhibitors we spoke to here in Vegas this morning.

Whilst Microsoft is still the only choice for viewers wanting high definition content, this hasn't slowed down the emergence of video in 720p format, according to chaps we spoke to from Webmaster Central. The largest barrier, in their opinion, has been the latent dial-up users who haven't switched to broadband yet. With the increase in broadband penetration predicted for 2005, they estimate that this is going to be a dwindling problem.

Vivendi helping out Ubi vs. EA?
The story continues to get more complicated. First France itself hints at assisting Ubi, now the biggest French publisher.

Shares in Ubisoft (UBIP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) soared nearly 10 percent on Wednesday after a report that Vivendi Universal might help the French video games maker fight a possible takeover bid from U.S. giant Electronic Arts (ERTS.O: Quote, Profile, Research) .

French newspaper L'Agefi, citing a source close to the matter, said that Vivendi (EAUG.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) and Ubisoft had held preliminary talks on the issue.

A merger between Vivendi Universal Games and Ubisoft would create the largest video games group in Europe, with sales of more than 1 billion euros ($1.33 billion), although it would still be dwarfed by Electronic Arts.

Xbox 2 Patent?
Although there were no Xbox 2 announcements at last year’s E3, a few tidbits regarding the next generation hardware were revealed by an effusive J Allard. In an interview with CVG, Allard talked about the “unbelievable amount of raw computing power” that will be available in the Xbox successor and how next generation software will take advantage of it.

Particularly, Allard described a new technique called “procedural synthesis”; special programs that create realistic bricks, trees, and other environmental objects, leveraging game artists from spending long hours creating repetitive geometry.

Today, we are bringing you a detailed analysis of a recent patent application made by Microsoft, which was approved on December 30th by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent not only exposes a real-life implementation of this “procedural synthesis” technique but also corroborates some of the leaked Xbox 2 specs.

AMD chips in for portable video players
AMD has developed a low-power chip that it thinks will make portable video players more compelling by reducing the time needed to transfer content to the devices. The company is expected to announce the chip at CES (the International Consumer Electronics Show) this week.

Portable video players with the new Alchemy Au1200 processor will play Mpeg files recorded by digital video recorders, eliminating the need for users to change those files to a different format, a spokeperson says.

AMD has designed a reference platform for manufacturers that includes the chip and media player software, and the company expects devices to emerge in the second quarter of this year.

We wonder about the ATI All in Wonder
THE ATI MULTIMEDIA department obviously followed the practice of delays well used by ATI 3D chip department. ATI delayed and failed to ship pretty much every single card on time in 2004 and X800AIW is no different.

Right now, there is no sign or any words indicating that All in Wonder X800 is going to see the light of the day anytime soon. This card was announced more than a few months back. To be precise, ATI talked about this card and made a tour sometime in September 2004.

We managed to find out that X600 AIW is ready, but who wants to get a four pipeline card in the time when you can get an eight pipeline card for the same money? Actually X600AIW is your only choice as there are no X700 AIW cards. X600 AIW is a four pipeline card.

PowerColour X800XL preview
The Inquirer have a very brief preview on the PowerColour X800XL:

I can at least share a picture and a few interesting facts about the card. X800XL works at 400 MHz core and 490MHz/980MHz memory. It features six pin power connector standard for all PCIe cards if they need more power. This card consumes more power than PCIe can provide, at least more than 75W.

The card has a Rage theatre chip on the back of the PCB and it's capable of Video IN and OUT options, comes in a nice box and with bunch of cables and software titles. It's HDTV ready and capable.

It's a Dual DVI card based on R410 core built on a 110 nanometre die powered with 16 pipelines and six vertex Shader units. And it features 256MB of GDDR 3 memory clocked at 980MHz.

GeForce 6200 in second quarter 2005
Nvidia plans to debut an entry-level version of its GeForce 6-series graphics chip, one that supports the AGP8X standard by the second quarter of 2005, according to sources in Taiwan.

Nvidia’s AGP-capable GeForce 6200 graphics chip will support Shader Model 3.0, the sources said. Then, its GeForce 6600 graphics chip supporting AGP8X will follow soon after the introduction of the AGP-enabled GeForce 6200, the sources added.

AGP8X-enabled graphics cards account for more than 80% of global graphics-card shipments at present since PCI Express (PCIe)-enabled graphics cards will not be replacing this market in the short term, the sources commented.

Palit has 6200 AGP card
Palit caught us off guard with announcement of its 6200 AGP card. Nvidia still doesn't talk about 6200 AGP as so far it only announced 6200 and 6200TC PCIe. Palit already has a 6200AGP.
We reported last week that Palit is likely to acquire Gainward in Taiwan.

The Palit 6200 AGP card has 128 MB or RAM and we suspect it's based on the NV43-V chip. The company already has a PCI Express version of the 6200 card listed and it has also announced a 6200TC card. The 6200TC card has less RAM on board as it can address system memory. It's based on NV44 chip.

Counterfeit AMD Microprocessors
Taiwan Authorities Suspend Workshop Dealing with Fake AMD Chips

Local authorities on Friday suspended a workshop that made fake, or remarked, AMD microprocessors in Taipei, Taiwan, and seized unprecedented number of chips of nearly one million units.

A report over Sin Chew Daily web-site claims the local police had discovered a workshop that remarked microprocessors made by Advanced Micro Devices to sell them at higher price-points. It is unclear, which chips have been attempted to counterfeit and whether the chips were also somehow modified. Source for the processors the swindlers used is also unknown. At least one man is reported to have been arrested and accused of illegal handicraft.

The scales of the illegal manufacturing were relatively high: according to the report the police seized nearly one million of AMD chips, either relabeled or not, with value measuring in hundreds of millions of Chinese Yuan. According to the report, the chips were primarily designated to ship into Southeast Asia, however, were also supplied to China and even Germany. It is unknown, whether the fake chips are sold in retail, or installed into PCs.

Remarked CPUs may work unstably, malfunction and probably lack any overclocking potential, a capability that is valued by computer enthusiasts.

In early 2003 AMD found out there were AMD Athlon XP microprocessors relabeled into higher-speed more expensive SKUs on the market. The Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices quickly informed its partners in the channel about the issue and then implemented certain measures to secure its chips from counterfeiting in future.

X-bit labs could not reach Advanced Micro Devices representatives on Sunday to find out the details. We intend to publish further details and clarifications in the coming days.

64-bit, Intel was right to wait?
Devhardware has an article up concerning last year when AMD launched 64-bit to the desktop market. Although for some things he says he is right, most of the text is just from some weak Google attempts (according to amdzone):

Quote: "This whole situation is why I agree with Intel regarding 64bit. It's simply something not needed by end users, outside of the server and workstation market. And even for those individuals, it's really the memory support that will be a boon for them, not the 64 bit integers. Heck, I'm using a system which was capable of 64 bit while Intel was still transitioning from 16 to 32, and yet only bother using a 32 bit environment and user space the vast majority of the time. After all, doubling the register size doesn't make the Internet faster, my audio playback better, or cause me to type this article any quicker."

Exeem beta review and screenshots
Bit torrent websites are doomed. The trackers they offer make them nice, fat targets for the MPAA/RIAA and they're potential single pionts of failure due to hardware and/or bandwidth issues. Can P2P survive? Only if it evolves.

Some Background:
Here's a quick n' dirty BitTorrent operational description. The bittorrent file download and distribution concepts take some understanding. You'll find terms like "seeds" and "trackers" with lengthy descriptions but to simplify things, all you need to understand here is that a single seed file (complete file) is needed to start the process. Once enough users connect and start downloading the file, additional users can begin to get pieces of the file from eachother. Bits of the file that one user has already downloaded become available to other users. The tracker receives information from all downloaders and gives them random lists of peers (other downloaders) to draw from. In essence, you could download a complete file from other downloaders and never once get any data directly from the original seed file. This means that the original seed file source location never gets swamped. Even better, the more people downloading that file actually increases your download speed since you'll have more sources to draw from.

Intel is not going to take the easy way out, put two cores in a package and wire them together, but they are going to come close.

Smithfield will simply be two adjacent Prescott cores with a little additional wiring between them. Every second row of cores on a wafer will probably be mirror imaged and the only new stuff is the wiring between the two cores.

Nforce 5 to clock P4 bus to 1200MHz
THE NFORCE 5 CHIPSET will be a highly overclockable chipset. Our sources confirmed that the Nvidia Pentium 4 chipset will go up to FSB 1200MHz, using 300MHz rather than 200MHz multiples.

Our friends at www.ocworkbench.com even have a screenshot to prove it. It goes up to FSB 300 without major problems. Intel 915 and 925 chipset cannot easily get to those speeds. For the record, an FSB of 300MHz means that in quad pumped Pentium 4 mode it actually works at 1200 MHz.

We also learned that this chipset is already sampling and that it is working well. Our industry sources that are important to Nvidia already saw the chipset in action and they showed some enthusiasm about it. This chipset is expected in the first quarter of 2005, and we are sure that Nvidia might grab some important design wins with it.

ATI's SLI to work without connector
ATI'S WAY OF doing SLI called AMR (ATI Multi Rendering) will work differently from Nvidia's now world famous SLI. ATI will make its SLI work without a small printed circuit board (PCB) to interconnect the cards.

SLI uses two PCIe graphic ports and in the case of Nforce 4, works at PCIe 8X for each card and renders your picture with both cards. For this operation Nvidia SLI needs a special interconnection between two graphic cards. It’s a small cable or PCB that transfers up to four GB per second from one card to another. For this operation, coordination is crucial as one card needs to know what the other card is doing.
