matt's new rig:
« on: March 25, 2004, 04:16:56 PM »

some of you oldtimers will remember the deals-gone-wrong associated with a long gone member who shall remain nameless. it's taken me a year to get a new rig together, but it's going to be sweet. here are the core specs:

2500+ (i think) Barton - in the post
Abit NF7-S - picking up in 30mins
ATi 9800Pro - picking up in 30mins
256meg of PC2700 kingston value ram ( Tongue) - got it
100watt HP OEM psu ( Tongue Tongue) - got it

with various other parts as well like cd-r/rw, 80gig hdd, etc.

the barton is being sourced from a certain mad scientist in florida, so while i'm waiting for it to get here i'm going to make do with a duron 600 which is getting here tomorrow.

it's going to be watercooled to some extent with at least 2 waterblocks - one for the cpu, one for the 9800 or the northbridge, whichever needs it more until i get another block.

and no that isn't a typo - the only PSU i have left is a 100watt unit out of a HP 4044 mini-atx system. i doubt it'll even boot the 9800pro, so it might be back to my TNT2 M64 PCI for a while as well.

as soon i buy a decent psu and better ram, i'm shooting for 21k 3dmark01 Smiley

i'll post back how everything goes

21K damn.. good luck... perc coudlnt' even get that, and w/ the 100 watt psu you probally wont be able to even boot.. even w/ a tnt2.. you'lll need alot higher than that Smiley

also you dont wanna hook that psu up because it might fry your mobo if the connectors are differnt which is a huge posiblity

I cant hit 20k due to the memory in my setup which is limiting me in my overclocking. You might be lucky though and get some GOOD valueram which overclocks nicely , funny thing is in many cases people use valueram over the hyper-x series and get better results (intel systems). I doubt you will hit 21k with that psu , but it is very possible if you get good overclocking parts , should have got a A-2600M imo , however the ram may do you good depends add another 256 though , and the videocard well you will just have to see how much you can get outta it.

you guys misquoted me - i'm not going for 21k with exactly that setup. i know the ram is letting me down, and i picked a decent 450watt psu while at the comp store today. add some better ram to the specs, and remember that i'm watercooling everything chilling the water if needed. perc's barton got him 2400 on air, so i might do a little higher on water.

here are the results of the first 3 benchmarks. vid card is not oc'ed yet.

~6300 3dmark01 (cpu @ 100x6 = 600Mhz)
~7200 3dmark01 (cpu @ 125x6 = 750Mhz)
~7700 3dmark01 (cpu @ 140x5 = 700Mhz)

it's interesting how the extra FSB (and memory) speed is worth more than the pure Mhz increase.....

What barton are u getting? The mobile one or just the plain desktop one?

I have basically the same rig as you, My best post is at 2600Mhz at 1.95 or 1.85 Vcore. I Have booted at 2500 mhz at 1.90 Vcore but It seems the volt is not stable enough, so untill I fix the Mosflets whith some custom heat sinks i probably cant overclock to 2500 mhz.

And I am bugged by the sirens when i move the Vcore over 1.75~1.80 so I will also have to fix the thermal diode under the chip to ensure it makes proper contact.

Anyway, happy OCing! Wink

peace perc,

i'm detecting 2 different cpu settings - 5.0x100 and 14.0x36. post screen reads my ddr at 72Mhz - double the 36fsb. 3dmar01 reads the 36Mhz, while sandra says 100Mhz. it's weird. even more so that the 36Mhz is the reading before i overclock in in windows using clockgen.....

thanks! it's going to be a mobile barton from perc - he supplies chips and boards worldwide Grin

i don't really have to worry about the thermal diode though since it's going be be watercooled...

DAMN, Matt is coming up my tailpipe with that Duron OC.
Now if I could get the Vcore lock off mine I could compete in the same division.
