Reformating problem *need help plz :(
« on: March 12, 2004, 12:48:24 AM »

this is the situation.

I noticed on my hotmail email account that my address has been spreading virus attachments over the net without me doing it.

i then changed my email password. It still sent viruses so obviously my hotmail password is still being logged.

thats when i decided to reformat.

i insert my laptop recovery disc and guess what, when i'm near 80% completion it says image error ¬_¬; probably the disc got scratched.

Anyway somebody of ausfx sent me a windows xp pro cd. The problem is that it doesn't start the cd when i restart.

The bios boot setup order is correct.

1. optical drive
2. hard drive
3. floppy drive

it's just that custom made windows xp cd thats not booting.

I don't have an os installed because everything is wiped out when i tried a failed recovery disc operation.

Anyway i then used a windows 98 boot disk so i could access dos.

i then used fdisk.

i created 1 main partition utilising the maximum and making it active.

i then format c: /s

Now what am i suppose to do ?

my optical drive is d:

so i tried typing setup

so it would run my windows xp cd, but it said that the program couldn't run under dos mode.

is there anyway i can get this to work ? start my custom made windows xp pro cd in dos ?

Reads BOOT.INI and present selection
Starts NTDETECT
Starts NTOSKRNL

Returns hardware list back to NTLDR

when i used the microsoft windows xp pro boot disk that uses 5-6 diskettes, on disk 2 it mentions ntldr and ntoskrnl not being available or something.

what should i do >_<; plz.

i am looking really hard and atm am looking at

I hope this helps, below is a link to microsoft that explains how to fix your ntldr and a few other things. I just made it tiny Smiley.

As for the CD not booting, your gunna need to do this to fix your ntldr anyways, go into your bios, and under one of the options find the boot device order. Make it load the CD drive before the HDD. Swap it back once windows is installed and everything works. The reason for this is so the computer trys to read the CD and install the OS instead of runnin somthin of the HDD.

So here is what I would do.

1. Change your bios so your CD starts first. Put in your WinXP pro cd and try and boot from it. If it boots from the CD just install windows as it gos. 1.CD 2.Floppy 3.HDD

2. If it doesnt boot from CD go back to your bios, make it load in the following order. 1.Floppy 2.CD-ROM 3.HDD. Then try the boot disks.

If that doesnt work, then check out the links below for information from microsoft. Dont try the links first Tongue.

Recover Start Up Problims (NTLDR and other things). http://tinyurl.com/25w56

Recover Boot Sector of HDD. http://tinyurl.com/2kzjn

I hope this was of help.

the bios order of booting was set like that already -_-;

1. cd
2. floppy
3. hard drive

maybe the virus infected mbr i don't know.

anyway i'm trying this out

Quote
To restore Windows XP Professional versions of Ntldr and Ntdetect.com on x86-based systems

Start Recovery Console by using the Windows XP Professional operating system CD.
Navigate to the system partition root and type the following commands from the Recovery Console prompt:
copy drive:\i386\ntldr

copy drive:\i386\ntdetect.com

In the preceding two commands, drive represents the letter of the CD-ROM that holds the Windows XP Professional installation files.

Answer the Overwrite system? (Yes/No/All): prompts by pressing Y.
Restart the computer.

problem is....

i checked the windows xp cd and it works for other computers.

anyway now i'm trying that copy d:\i386\ntldr

\i386 isn't found

also i switched to D: already which is my optical drive.

and i checked the cd layout and theres the i386 directory.

can't find a \i386 -_-;

thnx for the help stangmar.

recovery disc is busted and the win xp disc is a bit lurky, true bit who made it probably set it up to only run when starting it from an existing os. Or my optical drive is very lurky indeed.

Anyway his helping me by sending a new win xp copy Smiley i got the original win xp cd key Azn;

this was what i posted to the www.asus.com tech support.

<<Problem Description>>
Operating System : windows xp pro
My asus lc3/s laptop recovery cd is not working.

i inserted the cd and restart the computer.

it boots up and detects the cd then asks me to partition.

after i accept it then starts the recovery process to restore to the factory
default.

later it asks for cd2 recovery cd.

i put that in and let it work. Later during the recovery, it then says

image file on cd is invalid or corrupt.

how do i fix the problem plz.

So basicly i was given a recovery disc for my laptop. Can i use a normal windows xp pro cd to install ?

UPDATE:

A friend lent me his win xp home cd ! Now i can reformat !

I created 1 partition on drive c using fdisk. Using my friend win xp home i can install the os to that partition.

the significance pf this is not only am i no longer screwed, this is my first proper clean fresh reformat Cheesy !

You have to make your own partition and format it then install the os for a clean reformat am i correct Huh

if you just put in the win xp cd and let it do it for you is not the same ? o_O; hm

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

http://www.theeldergeek.com/clean_installation_of_windows_xp.htm

Thnx zyeo.

i read all the sites and i rate

http://www.buildyourown.org.uk/install.asp?sect=windows-xp

as the best. It's neat and is concisely to the point Cheesy I think i may have mucked up my home xp install.

These were the things i did.

1. reformat pc.
2. Go to bios by pressing f2. Set the boot up as...

floppy
cd
hard drive

3. use a diskette and did fdisk. Made sure there no partitions. Create a new main partition for drive c. Then format the partition i made and is active.
4. go to bios and switch boot order.

cd
floppy
hard drive

5. Put in win xp home cd and reboot.
6. install win xp to the active drive c partition.
7. after installed, i then went to www.asus.com and got the mobility m7500 ati graphics drivers, bio flash utility, latest bios rom, crystal audio drivers.

ps: for the crystal audio codec i replaced the intel ac97 sound driver with it. I can hear sound just wondered if i did good ?

i also downloaded a ati 4.3 control panel. I read that it supports the m700 series so i thought it was ok.

the bios flash was successful.

8. i updated my windows xp home and got all the necessary codecs, realplayer, winamp, mozilla firefox, java.

I also removed the old msn messenger using the run method and then replaced with the new msn messenger 6.

The only problem i noticed was when my bios boot order starts with either a floppy or optical drive Before the hard drive, i get a weird message saying to remove cd in there.

...

UPDATE:

Crap i forgot to check the floppy. There was a floppy left Cheesy hahaha. *slap self u silly mog Sad

Well, let me drop a little bomb: Some viruses can fake the adress they have been sent from, making the recipient (or online scanner) to think an virus came from you, when it actually comes from another computer which is infected and somehow has your e-mail adress.

I've got dozens of mails to one of my e-mail account (http) and I know i'm not infected, Since I use 3 to 4 mail accounts and only the spammed account got the virus warnings (hotmail account).

So, if you could not detect the virus by av and by manually searching the right reg strings, you probably never were infected...
