IF the seagate is only a 2meg cache, go the WD, otherwise i trust seagate.

i'm not quite sure but I think somewhere i read it was 6Mb. I told my friend to get the Seagate but he wants the WD because its 8Mb buffer. im trying to tell him that the seagate will give him better performance all round.

i have owned just about every diff brand of drive that you can get and i have learnt two things.
1) WD has been the most reliable
2) Maxtor are not even good for a doorstop

I chose WD, after my old 4Gb harddrive that have survived most S**t that can be thrown on a harddrive during daily use.
Heatshock, impact shock and stuff like that, it still runs.
Now I have retired a 6Gb IBM and replaced it with a 80 Gb WD, WD all the way now.

He needs to go with the Western Digital. Its only $5 more, and I've heard that Seagate is ok(hey, I've got one and it works great), but Western Digital is typically the best. And if the Western Digital has an 8 meg cache, and the Seagate has only a 6 meg cache, he would get worse performance with the Seagate, regardless of quality. Tell him to with the WD.  Cool

PS: Those prices aren't so great...or is that UK? I'm only asking cause I got a 120 gig 7200 rpm with 8 meg cache Seagate hard drive for $70 after an awesome rebate from Best Buy.

the mother board is a Gigabyte 8IPE1000 I865 (865 CHIPSET).
-this is what it says in the stats (S478,I865PE,800FSB,DUAL CHL DDR400, 8USB2,SATA, AC97, AGP8X)

so i guess it does!

In general the seek times on Segates are a little better than WD... this goes for IDE and SATA.  If your friend wants to spend a little more getting a SATA 7200rpm drive then by all means do it, but he most likely won't be able to notice the difference between the 7200rpm IDE drives.

But I still choose WD because they're more reliable in my opinion.  There's also 5 year warranties on my WD Raptors.... doesn't get much better than that.
