XBOX2 News
Team XBOX have a chat with CEO Steve Ballmer of Microsoft about the upcoming XBOX2:

"When you see the new Xbox, you're going to think it's un… -- well, let me say it politely -- unbelievable. Just unbelievable. The graphics, what it can do, the way things look, huge innovation. Rumors are that we'll see that product sometime soon. I couldn't comment, of course, on those rumors. But it's an amazing, amazing innovation."

NVIDIA Press Announcement
The new NVIDIA nForce4 has broken the sales record! NVIDIA has shipped more than one million NVIDIA nForce4 media and communication processors (MCPs), the industry’s most feature-rich core-logic solutions for AMD64-based computing platforms, since its availability in December 2004.

Demand for NVIDIA nForce4 SLI technology is exceeding the company’s high expectations, accounting for more than 25 percent of all NVIDIA nForce4 MCP shipments to date. This demand has resulted in the fastest sales ramp the platform group at NVIDIA has ever experienced, and helped NVIDIA grow its share of the AMD64 market to 48 percent, as reported by Mercury Research for the quarter ending December 31, 2004.

Prolink GeForce 6600 GT AGP8x
Today's product review will be a product from the well respected manufacturer Prolink. A company that isn't really out there alarming users with aggressive marketing campaigns. No, this is a relatively quiet company with a very keen insight on hardware and the reputation to deliver quality products, yet they always try to be a little different compared to the competition. That in fact is their signature. The product tested is of course their GeForce 6600 GT in a nice AGP flavor.

AMD cuts chip prices
The chipmaker, in a regularly scheduled price adjustment, followed the introduction of higher-performance Opteron server chips with cuts of up to 35 percent on existing Opterons. AMD also lowered the prices of its Athlon 64 chips for desktop and notebook PCs by as much as 34 percent and cut its Sempron value chips by between 6 percent and 19 percent. But in a twist, it also slightly raised the prices on a handful of processors, including a pair of Athlon MP server chips and a Sempron for desktop PCs.

Intel Xeon 3.6 2MB vs AMD Opteron 252
t's been five months since either of the processor giants released a new server processor. Today, both Intel and AMD have new offerings. Intel has updated their 3.6 GHz Xeon to include an additional 1MB of L2 cache, and AMD has bumped their quickest Opteron up 200Mhz to 2.6GHz with the Opteron 252. Neither one of these upgrades is groundbreaking, but they do offer some performance increases, especially the 2MB Xeon. We'll see some more significant releases later this year from both manufacturers with their Dual Core offerings.

HVD instead of DVD?
Six companies including CMC Magnetics, Fuji Photo Film, Nippon Paint, Optware, Pulstec and Toagosei have announced the formation of the "HVD Alliance" to promote the development of HVD technology. Holographic recording technology records data on discs in the form of laser interference fringes, enabling discs the same size as today's DVDs to store more than one terabyte of data (200 times the capacity of a single layer DVD), with a transfer rate of over one gigabit per second (40 times the speed of DVD). This approach is rapidly gaining attention as a high-capacity, high-speed data storage technology for the age of broadband.

Epox to launch Nforce 4 Ultra soonish
WE ARE IN an interesting period of time as Greater China celebrates the lunar new year of the rooster or chicken all this week. Some people are lucky enough to get two weeks holiday during this period.

However, Epox has told us that it is ready to ship its Nforce 4 motherboards as soon as everyone gets back from celebrating the Chicken Licken.

Its Nforce 4 Ultra motherboard with a single graphic slot and Nforce 4 SLI comes a little bit later - we believe after CeBIT. We are sure that Epox will demonstrate its Nforce 4 SLI at Cebit.

Nforce 5, C19 to arrive in April
AT LEAST some Nforce 5 motherboards should be available in April. We looked at some secret plans and mysteriously saw C19 based motherboard scheduled for April. This board, as we wrote earlier, is going to support Nvidia's somewhat exciting SLI marchitecture.

Yes, those boards will have two PCI Express graphic slots and will finally bring SLI to Dell and all the others who only want to use Pentium 4s. We don’t need to say that this marchitecture works with 775 P4 CPUs.

As we said in our earlier story, Nforce 5 will have a south bridge as well. We explained before that Pentium 4 chipsets have memory controller and it's very likely that this south bridge will feature Azalia like audio. We believe that Nvidia plans to replace C19 codename with Nforce 5 as a commercial name. That could change.

There will be q few versions of C19 and we can expect Nforce 5 SLI, Ultra and vanilla lines, just like Nforce 4 chipsets. Still, you will see many SLI boards, Ultras are coming to be while the vanilla flave is still not that widely available. I believe that Nforce 4 vanilla flavours might draw some customers among OEMs. The same business model will be applicable for the C19, Nforce 5 chipset.

Introducing the Cell
And now some more cell goodness for you today, arstechnica.com has an overview that looks at cell technology:

In this brief overview, I'm first going to talk in some general terms about the Cell approach — what it is, what it's like, what's behind it, etc. — before doing an information dump at the end of the article for more technical readers to chew on and debate. Once the conference is over and I get back to Chicago and get settled in, I'll do some more comprehensive coverage of the Cell.

More performance anyone?
The new Cell CPU that IBM, Toshiba and Sony have been working on is a 90nm CPU with 8 cores and promised clock frequency of 4 to 5 GHz.
Yes thats GigaHertz.
http://www.hardware.no/nyheter/images/ibm_thecell.jpg
There is a comparison pic for you.

The CPU consists of 234 Million transistors.
And is planned to be used in the new PlayStation 3/HDTV from Sony, HDTV from Toshiba and computers from IBM.

And for those that remembers RAMBUS, it uses memory from them RAMBUS homepage
It will use 2 types of memory, the FlexIO (6,4 GHz) and XDR (3,2 GHz).
Potential bandwidth will be around 100Gb per second.
Yes Gigabytes.

However this is just a paper launch so it will be some time until it will be availible probably in sometime this year.

Supposed to perform 10 times more than todays computers, but that requires software to be rewritten to use the full potential of the architecture.
It has allready proven clocks up to 4GHz in tests so far.

It remains to be seen this chips TRUE potential.

PlayStation 3 chip has split personality
The chip that will run the next version of the PlayStation video game machine will have nine processor cores and run faster than 4GHz, the chip's designers revealed Monday.

Engineers from Sony, IBM and Toshiba revealed those and other specifications for the Cell processor during a press conference at the International Solid State Circuits Conference, where technical papers on the Cell design will be presented this week.

The three companies have been working on the Cell for several years, promising to deliver a high-performance chip optimized for multimedia applications. Test production of Cell chips is set to begin later this year, and the processors will appear later in workstation PCs optimized for animation and other graphics chores. The chip will also power the next version of Sony's PlayStation game console, which is widely expected to be released late this year or early next year.

RIAA sues the dead
Death is no obstacle to feeling the long arm of the Recording Industry Ass. of America.

Lawyers representing several record companies have filed suit against an 83-year old woman who died in December, claiming that she made more than 700 songs available on the internet.

"I believe that if music companies are going to set examples they need to do it to appropriate people and not dead people," Robin Chianumba told AP. "I am pretty sure she is not going to leave Greenwood Memorial Park to attend the hearing."

Gertrude Walton, who lived in Beckley, West Virginia hated computers, too, her daughter adds. An RIAA spokesperson said that it would try and dismiss the case.

A core similar to NV50 will come later, possibly in 2006, or at least Nvidia will use some marchitecture that it meant to use on the NV50 closer to the Longhorn launch. Longhorn comes in 2006 but probably later, rather than early we think.
