ASUS A7N8X-X Overclocking
« on: May 06, 2004, 09:39:32 PM »

Hi,

I have a Athlon XP 2500+ (barton 333 fsb) and an A7N8X-X and have been trying to overclock it for a while now.

The only problem is that this mobo seems to overvolt the CPU by about .6 above the setting set in bios. Is it normal for this board to do this?

I can run the cpu at 12x166 with stock vcore, but need 1.75 which reads as 1.81 to run it at 10.5x200. To go to 11x200 it needs 1.85, which reads at around 1.9. I have a Tt Volcano 12 HSF but am still a bit hesitant about running it at 1.9v.

Is it normal for this CPU to require 1.85v to run at 2200mhz?

Thanks.

nope 2.5 isn't that 1.83 internal? and go for 2.2 internal that
so if you set your vcore to 1.750
memoryvolt to 2.7/2.8
than It should do it....

but try it with Genclock first first in BIOS set vcore and memoryvolt too the settings I told and your multiplier too 12 and then with Genclock set your fsb too 183? that's 2200 internal clockthan go game  for a while or let 3dmark drve on  your pc do the wors things with it and if you pc doesnt drop
than set it in the bios too 183 fsb...
and if you wanna see what 2200 internal is (barton) use uAMDtool than you can calculate the XPspeed of the barton (I think the xpspeed is 3200? but n ot sure)

Thanks, but i have already tried that and i can't get it to run above 2100mhz with 1.75 vcore which reads as 1.81 on the hardware monitor. At 2200mhz (which is a 3200+) it wont even POST... Sad and i have to set the vcore to 1.85 which reads as 1.91.

Does anyone have any idea why the mobo seems to overvolt the cpu? Does anyone else with this board get the same problem?

Some boards tend to under/overvolt its common , my board undervolts alot , solution go to the bios and increase the voltage if its undervolting , or decrease the voltage if its overvolting. The problem may also be linked to the PSU , if you got a crap psu then it could be the problem , try going into the bios first and lowering the voltage , try to stress test your pc and check whether the volts are fluctuating (you can use programs like MBM5 to check the voltage's) , if they are then try changing the PSU and testing again. You will want your voltages to stay as close as possible to their averages.

It's not the problem of the MB that's for sure

My friend has it too only he has a 2800+
but he drives @ Vcore 1.775
mem core 2.7

and his Xp speed is 3800

12.5x 200 = 2500 internal and 2500 internal is 3800+@Barton

so it can't be the board...

but what happens if you set vcore to 1.775 and mem too 2.7?
and than OC ? does it crash(reboot)?

it means your system is unstable, to increase your volt settings you might need more watt, maybe you just got not enough watt...? how many do you have? keep posting ,
im sure we can help...

Cyclone is complaining of overvolting - problem is either the mb (some boards use some weird ass equation crap to work out temps and voltages) or psu , doubt his athlon chip is damaged.

What about your ram , most of the times its your ram holding you back , try increasing ddr voltage and see what happens.

Thanks for the replies

The ram that I have is only PC2700, so I have to have that running on 166mhz so matter what, because even with more relaxed timings it won't take more than a couple of mhz OC. I have even tried running the CPU and FSB at stock settings, and the voltage in MBM reads as 1.71, but it does fluctuate between 1.71-1.72 sometimes, and gets up to 1.78.

The PSU is a 400w, so i doubt that is the problem, and even with some of the hard drives unplugged, it doesnt seem to make a difference.

I didnt think the ram voltage has anything to do with the CPU voltage, because even with all the settings on stock it still overvolts it. Would increasing the ram voltage help the cpu vcore?

I don't know if its my cpu but it seems to require an awful lot of voltage just to do a small OC, so do you think a new mobo would allow a larger OC at lower voltages? I was thinking of getting an NF7-S.

Atm i have it running at 2083mhz (a 2800+) at 1.7 vcore which MBM displays as 1.76-1.79.

Increasing the ram voltage has nothing to do with the overvolting of the cpu , doing that will possibly help you OC , crank the voltage up as high as possible.

I also have a A7N8X-X mainboard with XP2600+(barthon)
i have vcore on 1.650 and multiplier on 11.5, FSBclock on 190mhz and its running good.. so maybe tomorrow ill put vcore some higher

is this good so far? what i was doing?

You should only need to raise your cpu voltage if your overclock is unstable. Otherwise, you are just making more heat for yourself.

To test stability the totaltest thingy in the artifact tester that comes with the omega drivers is good or

Could be anything....
Make sure that you don't have any viruses, and run spyware checks etc to make sure nothings chewing up all your resources.

You can run task manager to see what programs are the resource and cpu time hogs and kill them off.

As a last resort, if your system is clean and its still slow, just reinstall windows.
