WinXP Pro x64 Edition Nearing Completion

GamePC have thrown up their review of Microsoft’s XP Professional x64 Edition RC1! Here's a snip.
We've been tracking the progress of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition since late in 2003, when we tested their first public build (1039) which was released in a pre-beta state. We've since followed up with reports of their later public builds, 1069 and 1218, both of which saw the operating system making huge strides in terms of stability, driver support, and software compatibility. While the operating system has been progressing nicely, the constant delays are enough to make anyone lose hope of a final release. We were beginning to think that the operating system would ever see the light of day, as we are now entering 2005 without a final copy in our hands and without a firm release date.

Star Wars: Empire At War Preview

Rolling right along, 1up.com has slapped up a preview on Petroglyph's upcoming Strategy title, Star Wars: Empire At War. Here's a bit on formations in the game:

Windows Longhorn to make graphics card i

MAJORITY OF USERS don't care about a graphics card because this majority uses only 2D operations, or should I say they need it just to draw and show picture on displays.
Some will use the graphics card to accelerate video files or help decode DVD content. but that's about it. The big mass or users don't care about 3D games or any kind of shaders. This is about to change with Longhorn.
Longhorn will feature a graphics subset called WGF (Windows Graphic Foundation). Its goal is to unify 2D and 3D graphics operation in one and will bring 2D Windows drawing and 3D operations together. Nowadays, 3D is done using a Direct X subset with the current version 9.0c.

NVIDIA releases new GPUs

Today NVIDIA announced two new products that are designed to fill holes in their current product lineup: the GeForce 6600 AGP and the PCI Express-based GeForce 6800 LE.
The GeForce 6600 AGP is designed to go head-to-head with the RADEON 9600 XT, and features the same 8-pixel pipeline graphics core found in GeForce 6600 GT, although it's running at a tamer 300MHz. Final memory speed will be determined by each card manufacturer, but most are expected to run in the 250-275MHz range. The boards will officially retail for $149-$199 depending on the configuration.
The GeForce 6800 LE PCI Express is based on the same technology as its AGP counterpart, featuring an 8-pipeline core running at 325MHz, and a 256-bit memory interface with 300MHz DDR memory. The card will support SLI and will be priced between $229-$279 depending on the card configuration.
Both cards will be available in February.

AMD 'unveils' Turion 64

The first 64-bit mobile microprocessor, it's also your first, last, and only protection from cyborg dinosaurs.
Turion presumably marks the first fruit of AMD's foundation last June of a Japan-based chip design taskforce dedicated with building better mobile processors.
At this stage it's unclear what Turion does that AMD's Mobile Athlon 64 processors, some developed for thin'n'light notebooks, others for more mainstream machines, don't. Presumably, we're looking at improved power management and possibly greater integration - perhaps a graphics engine built into the on-die North Bridge.
Not much in the way of details.

DVD+R DL 8X to come in 2005

THERE WAS an unusually great number of companies ready to talk about DVD standards and speeds here at CES.
The last couple of months, the price of DVD recorders went significantly down and you can now buy 16X DVD-R/DVD+R recorders capable of recording DVD-R DL, Dual Layer disks at four speeds for just about $65. Dual layer drives can store a massive 8.5GB but those disks still costs a fortune as you have to spend at least $7 or €7 per piece to get them. DVD+R or DVD-R discs with 4.7 GB capacity can be found for about one €uro or even less. Even if you want to spend that kind of money, those disks are usually 2.4 speeds only and rarely can you find some 4X DVD+R DL disks.

ATI X800 and X800XL

ATI CARDS BASED on the R430, 110 nm core can use the same printed circuit board. We spotted some Sapphire cards at the show one based on X800XL and second on X800 standard core both using the same PCB. We checked the numbers and we were right, the PCBs were the same.
In Sapphire's case, both cards were VGA + DVI design and both cards hadn't a six pin power connector. Power Color card that we previewed just before CES here has different cooler that covers memory as well, dual DVI outs and six pin PCIe power connector.

Intel, AMD dual core specs discussed

DEVELOPERS AT an X86-64 message board are discussing how best to get a dual core Opteron running using an Nvidia chipset.
One engineer discusses some of the specs of the chip, including cache size and clock rates, although you probably need to be something of a genius to wade your way through the technicalities.
And on another thread, there is a discussion of working with Intel's dual core chips, which may have core IDs as big as 256. Obviously for future use.

Pentium M Chips Sneak into Retail

Yet unannounced Intel Pentium M processors for 533MHz processor system bus emerged for sale in Tokyo, Japan. The products come in Intel’s typical retail packages, which implies that the chipmaker has already started to ship such central processing units to various customers including retailers.
Currently Intel Pentium M processors 760, 750, 740 and 730 clocked at 2.00GHz, 1.86GHz, 1.73GHz and 1.60GHz respectively are being sold in Tokyo, Japan. All the chips are based on the core code-named Dothan with 2MB level-two cache and are produced using 90nm process technology. The processors come in mPGA479 form-factor and are intended for yet-to-be-released mobile platform code-named Sonoma and i915-series chipsets code-named Alviso which supports 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus with enhancements for mobile processors.

Everything from Dual Core to DLP is covered in our CES show report...
Although it wasn't heavily advertised, Intel had a 925XE system running the new Pentium 4 600 series with a 2MB L2 cache in their booth. As you undoubtedly know by now, the Pentium 4 600 series is still a 90nm Prescott but with twice the L2 cache, EMT64 (x86-64) support as well as all of the features available in the current 500 series.

OCIA.net has posted an article on Unlocking / Overclocking the NVIDIA GeForce 6800. Below is a direct quote from the article:
"As you may know, one of the main differences between the 6800 base model and the GT version is the fact that the GT version comes with a total of 16 pixel pipelines, whereas the 6800 only has 12. I began reading on various message boards that some people were actually able to unlock the remaining four pixel pipelines on their 6800 cards for a total of 16, matching that of the GT model. This seemed completely reasonable, as the 6800 is more or less a watered-down version of its GT counterpart. My mind began to roam, wondering if it would be possible to unlock / overclock this base model XFX 6800 to the GT level, a card that cost nearly $130 more. And so my quest began..."

Intel forces vendors to buy 915

MOTHERBOARD VENDORS are saying that Intel makes them buy 915 and 925 chipsets whether they like it or like it not. Each time when they want to place an order for 875 or 865 chipsets, Intel kindly asks them to get some 915 or 925 chipset of their choice.
Everybody keep saying that 915 and 925 motherboard sales were not that great and that most motherboard companies have a huge stock of those boards sitting in some warehouses in Asia. You just cannot sell enough since the demand is still not there, is the plaint.
Motherboard manufacturers actually do want to buy many 875s and especially 865s as there is still strong demand for those boards. But there is a trick. Intel and its blue suited men and women made motherboard vendors buy 875 and 865 chipset only if they commit to buy 915 or 925 chips with it.
It's kind of forcing your sales like an enormous radish in a nightmare grow bag but if you are the boss you kind of can do it. It's called monopolism last time I checked. Not to blame Intel, of course. Its chip division has as its mission in the boulevard to sell as many of these chips as it possibly can. You can't blame it. And the INQ doesn't blame it.
Still this gives you a picture of the market acceptance of PCIe chipsets, especially Intel ones. It's a slow and painful artefaction, especially in the upgrade market. On the other hand, OEMs are doing fine with it as you, as a customer, buy a complete system that a company makes from scratch.

GT4 sells 635,000 in first week

Gran Turismo 4 has squeezed out its ancestor GT3 in the sales records by moving 635,000 units in its first week in Japan. As well as a simultaneous release in China, Sony made a million units available for the Japanese launch as the US version was postponed till 2005.
GT3 sold 620,000 units in the same period.

World of WarCraft: 600k sold

Blizzard Entertainment® today announced that World of Warcraft® has sold through more than 600,000* units to customers in North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The fastest-growing massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) has also shattered all previous concurrency records in North America, achieving over 200,000 simultaneous players during the holiday period.

Nvidia to finally ship 6800 U's PCI

NINE MONTHS after its NV40 introduction, Nvidia is still struggling to ship most of its PCIe high end parts based on this core.
NV45, 6800 GT or Ultra PCIe series are nothing more than an NV40 chip with BR2 bridge chip and specially PCB,but so far, Nvidia has hardly shipped any of the NV45s.
To be precise, Nvidia shipped some quantities of Geforce 6800GT PCIe but hardly any 6800Ultra PCIe. Luckily we heard from several sources that the first batch of NV45 based 6800 Ultra PCIe card is scheduled for end of the January. You can imagine our excitement when we heard that company can actually ship a chip announced nine months ago.

ATI's SB400 south bridge ready

IT'S HARD TO build a south bridge but ATI finally managed to finish its SB400 Southbridge chip. ATI told us that it was talking with its customers and learned that its customers wanted both ATI and ULI south bridge support for ATI boards.
Customers can buy ATI Southbridge chips if they want to, but at the same time they can go and use ULI chipset.
ULI is company that we all used to know under the ALI name and its south bridge has one huge advantage. Right now, it is the only chip that can work on the AMD platform and have Azalia audio support. Therefore some of the ATI partners would rather go for ULI than to ATI's own chipset.

nForce 5 Screenies

Check out Hot Hardware for screenies of a intel based nForce 5 setup.
That's right people you're looking at dual PCI Express slots in a standard desktop board and we were told in a private session that these slots specifically support a dual X16 lane graphics configuration. We weren't able to pull the heatsink off the Northbridge but we are fairly certain (and it was noted to us by rep we met with) that this is an nForce based motherboards in pre-production status. The Southbridge looks to be an Intel ICH6 but we can't be too sure since it has engineering brandings on it. Regardless we thought you'd like to take a look at this up close and personal. nForce 5 for the P4 with SLI (if that is in fact what this board is) looks to be right around the corner! |

ATI to finish Rialto in February

JUST LIKE WE previously reported, ATI will have its bridge chip ready sometime in February.
There is no rush as ATI still has some 9800PRO left to fill the AGP sub $200 mainstream market but stock won't last forever. Still, at some point, ATI has to start bridging its native PCIe chips and to make AGP cards from them.
We were told that X700 might be the first runner up for such a task but we don’t expect to see any of the bridged cards until sometime in March. There might be a good possibility that we might see such cards at CeBIT but no one is yet sure about that.

The chinese website HKEPC have snagged some details and slides of Intel's Pentium 4 660 series which could support EM64T!
From CPU-Z Version in 1.26, we may arrive the formula not to be able correctly to demonstrate the processor name, is treated as is by mistake Intel Pentium 4,558, moreover the core is Prescott but non- Prescott 2M, similarly uses 90 奈 metric systems regulations, the voltage demonstration is 1.334v, looked like P4 6 are the processor or can use Mutil VID, the voltage can by 1.25V to 1.4V, simultaneously we may see in Instructions demonstrated it supports the x86-64 instruction, namely has the EM64T technology. Gigabyte, Asus, Visiontek, Sapphire and Connect3D are present. Reviewing video cards using the same chipset is bound to produce the same result : boredom. All cards are within 2% of each other in most cases.

ATI RS400 puts Intel 915 to shame

AT THE SHOW we manage to see still the unannounced ATI RS400 motherboard. That is the Intel based motherboard with IGP core inside. It was funny to see motherboard with integrated graphic running some proper Shaders in medium quality and to be able to run game such as Far Cry.
We saw this system side by side with Intel's 915G installed, and it was literally killing it in both performance and quality wise. The folks didn’t want to tell that it's testing it against 915G but we did the math.

ATI X800 mobile runs dream notebook

ATI has a pretty large presence at the CES show, and the INQ took a few moments to talk about ATI's mobile and integrated products with Jon Carvill, who heads up the PR for that division.
We spotted a couple of notebooks with a mobile version of the X800 inside, running Far Cry. The X800 mobile (aka MRX800) is a 12 pipeline part and Far Cry ran like a dream, even on the huge 17-inch screens on the systems. Whilst the systems themselves were fairly hunky-chunky, Jon said that he is working to get high-end ATI chips into some machines that are thinner and lighter, which will be good news for portable gamers everywhere that don't want a laptop that's lug-tastic. The chip in these thinner machines won't be the MRX800 though. With ATI having launched the MRX300, MRX600 and MRX800 over the last couple of months, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out the unannounced part that will feature.

Nforce 5 SLI picture emerges

WE ASKED NVIDIA about Nforce 5 motherboards and Nvidia said that it isn't showing it off here. Nvidia said that we will see such boards sometimes later this quarter as it's too early to show them. However we managed to take a picture of the board when we least expected it.
It is still a prototype board but it was extremely interesting to so two PCIe graphic port together with socket 775.

CHIP FIRM AMD promised us earlier this week that we’d have an answer about the alleged heist of many thousands of its chips out in Asia.
It has sorely disappointed us, because although it promised it would get back to us on the same day, we’re still hanging on the telephone.
On another front, it also disappointed us by briefing US journals about its Turion 64, designed from scratch, which we’ve been writing about for many a week now.

R430 and R480 ship in quantities

YESTERDAY AT this show we managed to talk to our good friend, ATI CEO Dave Orton, and he told us that ATI has shipped quite a few R430 chips already. Senior VP Rick Bergman confirmed the claims and said that the company is doing fine in providing both R430 and R480 chips to its customers.
This finally means that ATI might start shipping its products after the announcement as X800XL, X800 and X850XT PE cards should be ready shortly. Taiwanese companies here said that for a change they can get those chips even now and that they are doing the last preparations before they launch the cards in retail. Their samples are either ready or will be shipped out very soon.

WE MET ATI here in Vegas but we were surprised to see ATI's chipset used in heavily overclocking situations. ATI managed to overclock systems to FSB 315 times 8.5 resulting a frequency of 2677.5 MHz on Athlon FX 55 core.
The machine was water-cooled and had new X850XT Platinum Edition card overclocked from 540 MHz to 600 MHz and memory running to a solid 1200MHz. ATI said that it hadn’t modified the motherboard or graphics card, so you can actually get to those scores yourselves.
